About Online Notepad

Online Notepad is a free, distraction-free web-based text editor for jotting down quick notes, drafting text, saving snippets, or working through ideas. Open it in any browser and start typing β€” no signup required, no software to install, nothing to learn.

Whether you're grabbing an idea before it slips, drafting a message, keeping meeting notes, or just need somewhere clean to think, our notepad handles it. Signed-in users get automatic account sync so notes follow them across devices, plus one-click public share links so they can send a note to anyone with just a URL.

All work auto-saves as you type β€” locally to your browser instantly, and to your account every couple of seconds when signed in. Nothing to lose to a browser crash, a closed tab, or a jumpy connection.

Anonymous = local only: Notes save to your browser via localStorage and never leave your device. Signed in: notes sync to your account so they follow you across devices, and you can create shareable public links.

How to use Online Notepad

Get to a saved, shareable note in three quick steps:

1

Start typing

Click into the editor and start writing. Your work saves locally as you type. Use the tabs above the editor to keep multiple notes at once.

2

Sign in to sync (optional)

Sign in with a free account so notes sync to the cloud. You'll see them from any device you sign in on, and can share individual notes via public links.

3

Share or download

Signed-in users can hit Share to generate a read-only public link, or Download to save the note as a .txt file, or Copy to grab the text for anywhere else.

Key Features

Auto-save that never forgets

Every keystroke is saved locally within milliseconds. Signed-in users get server-side saves every couple of seconds too, so notes survive browser crashes, closed tabs, and dropped connections.

Multiple notes with tabs

Keep several notes open at once via tabs above the editor. Switch instantly, rename inline, close individual tabs β€” anything you'd expect from a proper notepad app.

Public share links

Signed-in users can generate a read-only public URL for any note in one click. Anyone with the link sees a clean, printable version. Revoke anytime.

Cross-device sync

Sign in and your notes follow you β€” laptop at work, phone on the train, tablet on the couch. Everything stays in sync automatically.

Distraction-free interface

Dark mode, fullscreen mode, adjustable font size, and monospace toggle. Get the exact writing environment you want without hunting through settings menus.

Live counters

Word count, character count (with your tier's limit), and line count update as you type β€” handy for social captions, essays, code, or anything with a length target.

Download, copy, print

One-click download as .txt, copy the whole note to your clipboard, or print with clean formatting. No formats you can't use elsewhere.

Works offline

Once the page is loaded, you can keep typing without a connection. Local autosave keeps working; server sync resumes when you're back online.

Common Use Cases

  • Jot down quick ideas, thoughts, or reminders before they slip away
  • Draft emails, messages, or social posts before pasting them into the real app
  • Keep meeting notes, todos, or shopping lists organized in a single browser tab
  • Store code snippets, config values, or copy-paste text you use often
  • Share a quick note with a coworker or friend by generating a public link
  • Write blog drafts, essays, or long-form content with word count tracking
  • Use as a scratchpad while researching β€” keep tabs, quotes, and citations in one place
  • Sync a running personal journal across your phone, laptop, and tablet

Security & Privacy

We take your data seriously. Here's how we protect your notes:

  • Anonymous notes stay on your device: if you don't sign in, notes are saved only in your browser's localStorage and never touch our servers.
  • Signed-in notes are private by default: only you can see them. They're stored in an encrypted database and never shared without your explicit action.
  • Share links are opt-in and revocable: notes only become publicly accessible when YOU hit Share, and you can revoke the link at any time.
  • Shared pages aren't indexed: we send noindex, nofollow so Google won't crawl your shared notes even if the URL leaks.
  • TLS encryption everywhere: all data between your browser and our servers is encrypted with TLS 1.3.
  • Full account deletion available: delete your account at any time and every note goes with it, immediately.
