About the Volume & Liquid Converter
The Volume Converter turns any liquid or dry-volume measurement into every other common unit — milliliters, liters, cubic meters, cups, pints, quarts, gallons, teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces — in one place. Type in any field, every other one updates at the same time. US customary and UK imperial units are shown in separate groups because they are not the same size, and swapping them silently is one of the most common measurement mistakes in cooking, brewing, and dosing.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Common uses
- Cooking & baking — American recipes call for cups, UK recipes for millilitres; this page swaps between them without silently mixing US and UK cup sizes.
- Home bar & cocktails — jigger measurements go between fluid ounces, ml, and shots.
- Brewing & wine-making — gallons, quarts, liters interconvert cleanly.
- Fuel economy & automotive — US gallons vs UK gallons matters for mpg comparisons across regions.
- Medication & nutrition — teaspoons and tablespoons converted to millilitres for accurate dosing.
Why US and UK gallons differ
The US gallon is derived from the old English "wine gallon" (231 cubic inches, standardized in 1707). The UK gallon was redefined in 1985 as exactly 4.54609 liters and is 20% larger than the US gallon. Everything downstream — pint, quart, fluid ounce — also differs between the two systems. That's why the same recipe reads differently in New York and London, and why this converter lists US and UK units in separate blocks.
Supported units
Metric: milliliter (ml), centiliter (cl), deciliter (dl), liter (L), cubic meter (m³).
US customary: teaspoon (tsp), tablespoon (tbsp), fluid ounce (fl oz), cup, pint, quart, gallon.
UK / Imperial: fluid ounce, pint, quart, gallon.
Other: cubic inch (in³), cubic foot (ft³) — for shipping volumes and tank sizes.
Exact conversion ratios
- 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters (231 cubic inches exactly)
- 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 liters (exact, defined 1985)
- 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735295625 ml
- 1 UK fluid ounce = 28.4130625 ml
- 1 US cup = 236.5882365 ml (metric cup, used in some recipes, is 250 ml)
- 1 US pint = 473.176473 ml; 1 UK pint = 568.26125 ml
- 1 teaspoon (customary US) = 4.9289 ml; 1 tablespoon = 14.7868 ml
- 1 liter = 1000 ml = 1000 cm³
- 1 cubic meter = 1000 liters
Teaspoon & tablespoon — a note
The exact US customary teaspoon is 4.9289 ml and tablespoon is 14.7868 ml, but most modern cookbooks and measuring spoons round these to 5 ml and 15 ml respectively. Australian cookbooks use a slightly larger tablespoon (20 ml). This tool uses the exact customary US values so conversions are precise; for casual cooking, treat 5 ml ≈ 1 tsp and 15 ml ≈ 1 tbsp.
