About PDF to MT940
Most banks export MT940 directly, but not every bank, and not for every account or every old statement. When all you have is the PDF, this tool rebuilds the MT940 file from it: the opening and closing balances, and one :61: entry per transaction with its booking date, value date, amount and description.
Reading a PDF is guesswork compared to reading a real export, so the converter does not ask you to trust it. It checks every transaction against the running balance printed on the statement itself. If a row adds up, it is marked as reconciled; if it does not, you see exactly which row and why, before anything is downloaded.
Privacy first: Your files are processed using client-side JavaScript when possible. Files sent to our servers are encrypted with TLS and automatically deleted within 1 hour.
How to use PDF to MT940
Get the result you need in just three simple steps:
Upload the statement PDF
A PDF downloaded from online banking works best. Scanned or photographed statements are read with OCR.
Review the balance check
Every row is listed with its status. A fully reconciled statement is marked verified; anything else tells you which rows to look at.
Download the .sta file
Import it into your accounting or ERP software like any MT940 file from your bank.
Key Features
Checked against the statement's own balances
Each transaction is checked against the balance printed after it, so a single misread amount is caught and pinned to its row rather than silently shifting every total that follows.
Credits and debits by column, not by guess
The converter works out which column is paid in, paid out and balance from the layout and the headings, and confirms the choice arithmetically against the balances.
Any date and number format
31.01.2026 or 01/31/2026, 1.234,56 or 1,234.56, amounts marked CR/DR or S/H, newest-first statements: the format is detected once per document, and you can override it when a statement is genuinely ambiguous.
Scanned statements
PDFs without a text layer are read with OCR at 300 DPI. OCR misreads digits more often, which is exactly what the balance check is there to catch.
Common Use Cases
- Importing statements from a bank that only offers PDF downloads
- Back-filling accounting software with old statements from before an MT940 export was set up
- Reconciling an account where only the paper or scanned statement survives
Security & Privacy
We take your data security seriously. Here's how we protect your files:
- Uploaded over TLS and processed automatically on our server; no person looks at your statement.
- The PDF, the MT940 file and the check report are deleted automatically within two hours.
- Nothing from the statement is stored in our database or used for anything other than producing your file.
- If you would rather not upload a statement at all, an MT940 export from your bank is always the more accurate source.
